Inspiration

This sculpture is a bronze portrait of Martha Jane Sands, a beloved tribal elder of the Grand Ronde Tribe of the Pacific Northwest. For this commission, Rip was selected unanimously by the council elders from among many top Northwest artists who submitted their work. Upon seeing Rip’s maquette rendition of Martha Jane, many elders in the council broke down in tears, feeling that the sculptor had captured her spirit.
